Marcell Nickmann is one of the most outstanding Hungarian guitarists of his generation. Born in Budapest, he started his classical guitar studies at the age of 14. He quickly achieved success after just one year of playing, winning first prizes in several national competitions. He studied in the Music Faculty of University of Szeged, first with Andrea Bozóki and later with Dávid Pavlovits. During his studies he continued winning prizes in renowned international competitions including 3rd prize in the Tallinn International Guitar Competition, 2nd prize in Harmonia Cordis and Nürtingen International Guitar Competitions and 1st Prize in the Szeged International Guitar Competition. In 2021 this granted him the prestigious title ‘Eurostrings Artist’, having his first European tour giving concerts and masterclasses, joining the stage with world famous stars of the guitar world. He played in many European countries including France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands and Estonia to name a few. In 2023 he had his first tour in the USA, including concerts in Chicago, Cleveland and also his debut concert in New York as part of the ‘Emerging Hungarian Artists’ concert series.
Marcell Nickmann is a very active chamber and contemporary music performer. He premiered Claude Vivier’s piece ‘Pour guitare’ and the piece called ‘Asking you’ from Dávid Pavlovits in Hungary. He also played the world premiere of two chamber music pieces from composer Ákos Nagy. Marcell Nickmann is not just an excellent performer but actively makes transcriptions for the classical guitar, enriching the instrument’s repertoire.
